Specifiers as Secondary Heads

چکیده

One of the important tasks of a syntactic theory is to provide an account of the different dependency relations that hold between elements in a phrase.1 In Dependency Grammar (following various traditional grammatical traditions (cf. Lyons 1968), there are two basic types: complement and adjunct (or modifier). The first defines an obligatory relation between a functor (or head) and its argument and the second an optional modification of a category (or head). In Categorial Grammar, these two are the only types of relation allowed by the basic theory2, as shown in (1) where X and Y are any category labels. 1 Categorial Grammar:3 i X/Y + Y ⇒ X Complement ii X/X + X ⇒ X Adjunct

Specifiers, Not Heads, Determine Phrase and Clause Type

The idea that the head of an expression determines the type of that expression is a deeply entrenched axiom of modern linguistics. It is the basis of X-Bar Theory and Dependency Grammar and a key notion underlying Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) and Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG). It has a long history dating back at least to Bloomfield’s notion of endocentric construct...

An HPSG Account of Danish Pre-nominals

This article addresses the issue of selection restrictions for noun phrase specifiers. Danish data is presented which shows that definiteness plays an important role in this respect. It is pointed out that an analysis is required in which the specifier, when present, leaves a mark on the projected phrase. This is achieved by assuming that specifiers are syntactic heads of noun phrase constructi...

Economy, Innovation, and Prescriptivism: From Spec to Head and Head to Head*

This paper decribes cyclical changes in negative and wh-constructions as a change from Spec(ifier) to Head. It accounts for this change through an economy principle that says ‘if possible, be a head’. The changes examined all show a tendency towards heads and headchecking but execute this in slightly different ways. In addition, innovations introduce new specifiers, and prescriptive rules retai...

Headless Constructions and Coercion by Construction

Among the many relations which play a role in syntactic and semantic generalizations one has carried a unique historic burden as the regulator of interaction between the two levels: that of head. While the canon of heads has been expanded to include an array of nonlexical categories, as in the functional projections of the minimalist program (see, e.g., Marantz 1995, Radford 1997), syntactic th...

The Epp Is Independent of Case: on Illicit Unaccusative Incorporation∗

The stipulative nature of the (generalized) EPP – the requirement that certain functional heads have filled specifiers – has led to numerous attempts to subsume its effects within other properties of natural language (e.g. Fukui & Speas 1986; Bošković 1997, 2002, 2007; Martin 1999; Grohmann et al. 2000; Epstein & Seely 2006; Landau 2007; Bjorkman & Zeijlstra 2014; Richards 2014; McFadden & Sund...
